Manchester Historical Facts

In AD 79 Manchester was a Roman Fort named Mamucium due to the breast shaped fortress. Later in the 13th century a small hamlet began to emerge but up until 1750, Manchester was little more than a village. But when Arkwright’s steam-powered cotton-making machine was fired up in 1783, Manchester grew to become the cotton centre of the world, earning the name Cottonopolis.

From watchmakers to tea dealers and iron foundries to boilermakers, Manchester had huge success during the industrial revolution and in 1853 it gained city status. It celebrated its wealth and fame by investing in art galleries, theatres, libraries, and proud civic structures, like the Town Hall that you can see today.
