The surfing capital of the UK. Newquay boasts some of the best beaches on the North Coast and is crammed with enough pubs, clubs and bars to rival Ibiza. This Cornish Town is the perfect place to let off some steam and party till the early hours.
WHAT TO DO DURING THE DAY ON YOUR NEWQUAY STAG WEEKEND
Since the late 20th century Newquay has been recognised as the UK’s ultimate surfing and holiday resort and international surf competitions are regularly held here. Experienced or a beginner the Atlantic rollers guarantee prime surfing for all levels so how about trying it out on your stag weekend in Newquay, remember - girls just love a hunky surf dude!
As well as the lure of surfing (and with 20 surf schools you really should give it a go) plenty more sports are available to try out including kitesurfing, wakeboarding, powerkiting, abseiling, climbing and land yachting – you really are spoilt for choice.
At any given time in Newquay there seems to be a music/surf festival of one type or another. The Radio One roadshow was first broadcast from a small caravan in July 1973 in Newquay and now it hosts the top events on the surfing calendar.
The Rip Curl Boardmasters event held in August (now in its 26th year) features guest DJs such as Judge Jules, Jo Whiley and Dave Pearce live from Fistral Beach. There is usually a bikini competition so it’s great for checking out the local totty!! Wicked dance anthems and the Board Masters Surfing Competition make for a great mix. The Budweiser K-Fest and the Animal Beach Ball in July again set the trend for the option of surfing in the morning, soaking up the atmosphere and chilling out to the biggest UK bands in the evening.
There are so many festivals over the summer season (too many to mention actually) so here is just a taste of what’s on offer. In May there is a Real Ale and Pie Festival with over 50 fine ales and homemade pies to choose from held at the 16th Century coaching inn Smugglers Den, at Cubert, just a 15 minute drive from Newquay, it’s perfect for getting stoked up!! Vegetarians are catered for and with live jazz and traditional Cornish folk music it’s a great chill out.
For car enthusiasts there are two “Show ‘n’ Shine” Events. The “Run to the Sun” Festival, now in its 21st year, is a three-day convention for VW owners with live entertainment, DJs, performers and a laser show. For Mini enthusiasts a taste of Italy comes to Newquay with hundreds of minis arriving for a two-day event and “Riviera Run.” Both events are held in May.
For gazing at more fit bodies check out Miss Cornwall held at the beginning of May at Fistral Beach with heats held at centrally located bars and nightclubs.
Or how about showing off your own physical skills and put you and lads through your paces by entering teams in the Newquay Adventure Race held at Lusty Glaze Beach during May, where the challenges include mountain biking, trail running, river crossing, cliff abseiling and an assault course. Last one back gets the drinks in!!
After all that exertion you will need to recharge your batteries so why not try out the regional speciality - Cornish pasty. Traditionally eaten by miners, farmers and fishermen, as it was a complete meal in a pastry case – some even had meat at one end and fruit at the other. Just wandering the streets of Newquay you will come across many bakeries selling pasties and the smell is just amazing. So get ready to give those taste buds a treat on your stag party Newquay!
If you really feel like pigging out remember you are in the home of the traditional Cornish cream tea usually consisting of scone, jam and clotted cream. These are best eaten at the Chy Bar and Kitchen, an all day bar and restaurant which serves everything from breakfast to evening dinner, gorgeous by day with great views and sophisticated by night. “Chy” is the Cornish word for “home” and it’s pronounced “shy” by the way! Well worth a visit at anytime of the day or night.
Less than an hours journey away is The Eden Project originally created out of an old china clay pit it looks at human’s relationships with plants and asks searching questions on bio-diversity, sustainability and climate change. Since its launch The Eden Project has held rock concerts, art exhibitions and theatrical events so you’re promised a whole host of entertainment during your stag weekend in Newquay.
Or, how about visiting the Blue Reef Aquarium situated centrally in Newquay, with local Cornish marine life, hundreds of tropical species, an underwater tunnel and a new shark lagoon it’s a great place to chill out if the weather’s a bit off!
With all the sport and physical activities you are definitely going to need to drink plenty so why not check out a local brewery – Skinners - at Truro just 30 mins away. They offer a tour of the brewery followed by a tasting session in the Visitors Centre. With lagers, ales and ciders with names taken from Cornish folklore such as “Keel Over”, “Betty Stoggs Bitter” “Ginger Tosser” and “Figgys Brew” you may have to taste a few until you find a favourite!!! Started in 1997 this brewery now claims the crown of overall champion in the South West Region Beer Competition for the 3rd year in a row with its “Cornish Knocker Ale.”
However hard you may try the lure of the beach will be hard to ignore at some point on your stag weekend Newquay. We at FREEDOM have checked out all the beaches so that you can head to the right place for surfing/swimming/beach volleyball or just chilling out. So pass on eye over our Newquay Points of Interest Page where we have described the different beaches and, at the same time, why not brush up on your surfing lingo so that you can hang out with the surf dudes and feel at home on your stag weekend in Newquay!
