Surf Dudes

Of course we are assuming you’ll want to look cool at the beach, if you want to impress the beach babes take note of the cool clothing labels. Some will be familiar names like Animal, O’Neill, Billabong and Quicksilver, but there are others that would really impress.

Gul is the U.K’s biggest watersports company and does its own lifestyle clothing range. Hurley is an American surfing clothing label and Protest Boardwear do their own range too.

So you may look the part, but can you talk the lingo? Do you know your “barrels” from your “breaks” and the difference between a “kick-out” and a “tow-in”?

“Kick out” is a term used to describe the act of pulling out of a wave.
“Tow in” is where you are assisted to get to a large wave by being towed there by a jet ski or helicopter – don’t worry it’s not likely to happen in a beginners lesson!!
A “wipe out” however, is far more likely - where you fall off your board whilst riding a wave!

Even waves and breaks have different names and you will come across terms such as “ground swells”, “reef break,” “tube,” and “lip.” Don’t be alarmed they are just more technical terms and describe a type of wave or how it curls towards the shore.

Surfing lingo that you would definitely expect to hear will include a lot of “dudes” i.e. a fellow surfer, “bruddah” used between surf buddies to mean brother, and if the surf teacher uses “bitchin’” he’s not referring to the girls watching you, it means the surf was awesome or cool!!

Beat the Hangover

You know it's going to happen, well it's compulsory to some.
Before Crashing Out:
* Drink a pint of water or even better vitamin C laden orange juice
* eat – almost anything will do as a lack of sugar causes that wobbly trembling feeling.

Next Morning:
* Big fry-up – it’s the one time you can legitimately order the full works. It’s official, this will give you an energy boost and is good at clearing out the toxins – honestly! Eggs and meat are rich in amino acids.
* Hair of the Dog? Oh yes this gives your body something else to think about, but you’ll still have to face the hangover eventually.
*Water – drink a pint every hour all day.
* Sleep!!!
