CAMBRIDGE HEN DAY

Cambridge hen partySo you’re thinking about Cambridge as a venue to celebrate your hen weekend and probably wondering what it has to offer a bunch of girls looking for a great party time. Here at FREEDOM we’ve been studying Cambridge just for you and, having done our homework, we don’t think you will be disappointed!! We think Cambridge has so much to offer, on lots of different levels, we are giving the city an A* grade for hen weekends in Cambridge. Read on to find out how Cambridge got such a high mark…..

Cambridge Shopping

First it has to be shopping. No hen party is complete without it! So get those credit cards ready because there are plenty of chic shops just waiting to flex that plastic for you. Within the city boundary you will find the best shopping in the region whether you prefer department store or designer boutique. The Grafton Centre, a shopping mall, is a 10 minute walk from the city centre across Christ’s Pieces (a Victorian park which links the city to the Grafton Centre) and is home to regular favourites such as Next, Kaliko, Faith and H and M.

Lion Yard, St Andrews Street, has Miss Selfridge and New Look while the Grand Arcade is home to the new state of the art John Lewis. Situated in the heart of Cambridge, this shopping mall offers popular shops such as Warehouse and Wallis with quality names such as Hobbs, L K Bennett, All Saints and The White Company.

Cambridge shoppingHowever if it’s designer labels you are after then the smaller boutique style shops offer a massive choice. Reeves, King Street and Reeves ii, Bene’t Street have designer clothing for him and her from Firetrap to Lacoste and Burberry to Versace. Giulio, Sussex Street, sells Gucci and Prada, while Blu Max sells D 'n' G, Moschino and Versace in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Finally Hero, Green Street, sells Nicole Farhi, Paul Smith and Orla Kiely.

If vintage is more your style then go and check out Boudoir Femme for original vintage and vintage inspired clothing as well as perfumes, toiletries and jewellery too.

For more unusual weekend shopping check out Botanicus on Petty Curly (it’s the name of a street!!) where you can find spices, teas, bath oils and numerous desirable objects. Breeze on Trinity Street, an independent shop, specializes in interior home accessories such as candles, tableware and gifts.

With all these stores and a bustling market held everyday in the market square, it’s certainly a day shopper’s paradise for your hen party in Cambridge.

But girls, after all that retail therapy you are going to need to take a break and have some refreshment. Luckily, cafes are aplenty in Cambridge but why not try and seek out Trockel Ulmann and Freunde. This German run café is a well-kept secret due to its location and is very popular with students. However, don’t let this put you off as it is an oasis of warmth and colour and sells the most divine cakes. Origin8 Deli Café supports local farmers and businesses in East Anglia and offers organic, free range food in its deli and serves the same food in its café from soups and salads to pizzas, pastries and snacks.

During your hen weekends in Cambridge you should definitely take time to chill out during the day and stroll around the beautiful parks. Cambridge’s main attractions are easily within walking distance. Visit the tranquil University Botanic Gardens with it's fantastic array of plants from desert cacti to tropical fly-traps, wander around its famous streets or why not meander along the “Backs” of the colleges admiring the architecture from punt or bank, in true Cambridge hen weekend style.

Cambridge punting

Cambridge Punting

Just remember to pack the bubbly for a laid back afternoon punt on your hen party in Cambridge. The Botanic Café within the University Botanic Gardens is worth a stop as it is a haven for locally baked cakes and freshly made sandwiches served in a wonderful location.

If you are up for a little hen party brain training then Cambridge has a wealth of museums to visit including the Wipple Museum of the History of Science, the Sedgwick Museum of Earth Sciences, the Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, the Museum of Zoology and the Scott Polar Research Institute!! Just think of all those brainy Post Graduate students you could bump into studying Law or Philosophy not to mention Nanoscience or Genetics!!

Or, for more of a good fun girly day out - how about a flutter on the gee-gees?? Newmarket and Huntingdon racecourses are nearby so don’t forget to pack your best hat and dress to impress on your hen party.

Cambridge Boat Race

How about timing your Cambridge hen night to coincide with the incredibly English “Boat Race?” This hard fought rowing race between Oxford and Cambridge was created in 1829 by two friends, one at Oxford, and the other at Cambridge. Plenty of pubs and bars line the course, so why not get the bubbly ordered, kick your heels back and soak up the party atmosphere.
