About Cambridge

Situated around 50 miles from London in the East of England Cambridge is surrounded by picturesque villages. To the north is marsh land called “Fens” so don’t expect too many hills here as this is rolling countryside for farming and fabulous for country walks. Cambridge itself dominates the landscape and is easily one of Britain’s most beautiful and romantic cities.

It has inspired artists, writers and poets throughout time and continues to do so today with its elegant buildings and magical ambience. Famous authors to have used Cambridge as a backdrop to their novels include Sylvia Plath, Kate Harrison and E.M. Forster to name a few.

Residents, students and visitors are seriously spoilt in Cambridge with Gothic to Modern architecture, idyllic settings for punting on the River Cam, a city which is a renowned seat of learning and all this, girls, is temptingly easy to get to for your special hen party.

It is the colleges that so typify the image of Cambridge. The first recorded university was 1209 when monks came to Cambridge from Oxford, as it was more peaceful for studying. Peterhouse, the first college, was founded in 1284.

Cambridge History

With your permission we’d like to educate you a little about the history of Cambridge. This city dates back to pre-Roman times and archaeological excavations have found evidence of occupation and hunting weapons from the late Bronze Age around 1000BC. Further evidence has traced the Iron Age to this area too around the 1st Century BC. But it was the Romans who built the first settlement here in AD40 as it was a convenient crossing point of the River Cam and so became a popular port in its day.

Throughout Anglo-Saxon times it was a busy settlement and still standing today is the tower of St Bene’t’s which is the oldest building in Cambridge. The area retained good trading links with the Continent and became very prosperous.

The Normans built a fort on Castle Hill in 1068 and all that remains today is a mound, which is allegedly the highest point in Cambridge. Apparently if you go directly north from here there is no higher ground until you reach the North Pole!!

Famously Oliver Cromwell was educated at Sidney Sussex College and was elected Member of Parliament for Cambridge in 1640. When he finally came to his demise at the hands of Charles II his head was buried in Sidney Sussex College but it is a mystery as to its whereabouts!!

The first women’s colleges were founded in the late Victorian times although degrees were not awarded to women until 1948. Well, we’ve come a long way since then!!

Famous scientists at Cambridge have included: - Isaac Newton for his work on gravitation in 1687, Charles Darwin describing evolution in 1859 and the splitting of the atom by Ernest Rutherford in 1903.

This link with science has continued and is strengthened even more so today as Cambridge, nicknamed “silicon fen,” is now an internationally recognised centre for technological innovation. The science parks, based on the edge of the town, are now home to many of the world’s most advanced technological companies. The microchips we use everyday in our i-pods and mobile phones could easily have been designed in Cambridge.

Some of our best comedic talent have studied in Cambridge and been part of the world famous “Footlights” – a theatrical group for Cambridge students which still continue to put on shows today. Great talents such as: - Sacha Baron Cohen, Peter Cook, Stephen Fry, Hugh Laurie, Griff Rhys Jones, Eric Idle, John Cleese, Emma Thompson, Clive James and countless more have been part of this group.
