The Cockney Accent
Due to the diversity of cultures now residing in old London Town, you’ll be hard pushed on your hen weekend in London to come close to hearing a cockney accent, which is a real shame - unless, of course, you happen to bump into David Beckham or Michael Caine at the Ivy.
The cockney accent is generally considered to be one of the broadest of the British accents and epitomizes the working class workers of London. To be a true Cockney it is generally agreed a person has to be born within hearing distance of the bells of St. Mary le Bow, Cheapside in the City of London. Of course we are familiar with the voices of the colourful characters from this region whilst watching one of our favourite soaps, Eastenders.
Cockney is characterised by its own special vocabulary and usage, and by its own development of ‘rhyming slang’. Rhyming slang is still part of the true Cockney culture, though today more often used for effect. So here’s a few helpful hints for your hen weekend London.
mauf = mouth
ci’y = city
a drin’ a wa’er = a drink of water
Sco’land = Scotland
‘ouse = house
‘ammer = hammer
fin = thin
barf = bath
free = three
dinna = dinner
And for some cockney rhyming slang:
apples and pairs = stairs
plates of meat = feet
John Cleese = cheese
Cash = sausage and mash
Coffee = sticky toffee
Shoes = ones and twos or rhythm and blues
Star = La-di-da
Tube = Oxo cube
Nosh = Becks and Posh

We had a fantastic time. The hotel was clean, tidy and comfortable. The cabaret and show were absolutely amazing. We are already trying desperately to think of some other excuse to visit the one in Bournemouth which is closer to home!!! The venue was fantastic, the buffet was surprisingly good and the performers were amazing!!
Our main aim was to have lots of fun and I can confirm that all of us have jaw ache from smiling, stomach ache from laughing and sore throats from screaming at the Cabaret boys for more !! Thank you and your team for helping me to plan Sarahs hen weekend.
With kind regards,
Claudia
