Edinburgh really does offer something for everyone, especially as it is one of the most picturesque cities in the world. Edinburgh offers a shopping experience like no other. Shoppers can head to a variety of experiences from High Street favorite shops in and around Princes Street, including department stores such as Jenners, Scotland’s answer to Harrods! Harvey Nichols to the funky boutiques of the New Town and West End, you’ll be spoilt for choice on your hen weekend in Edinburgh.

Edinburgh has always been a great place to visit at any time of the year. It has an energetic, 24-hour entertainment café-society. We lost count of the hundreds of pubs and bars throughout the city – great for a hen weekend in Edinburgh!

It’s not all tartan, heather and kilts! It’s truly a world-class capital city catering for all tastes and budgets. Among the cobbled streets and Gothic architecture you will find everything you could wish for, from chic modern boutique hotels to the cheap and cheerful chains, fantastic food in cosy pubs and food from around the world in stylish restaurants.

It wouldn’t be a hen weekend Edinburgh without the positively pulsating and buzzing nightlife. You may not know this, but Edinburgh is home to the World’s biggest street party which celebrates New Years Eve (Hogmanay).

The new Scottish Parliament has given Edinburgh a newfound dynamism bringing visitors from around the world, so much so that MTV held their Europe Music Awards here in 2003, which was hosted by Christina Aguilera and Justin Timberlake, there were almost more celebs in Edinburgh than locals!!

Talking of celebrities, Edinburgh is hometown of the best 007 ever, Sir Sean Connery! Who else might you see when you are here? Well, other famous sons and daughters of the city are Gail Porter and Kirsty Gallagher, - TV presenters, Rory Bremner - impressionist and comedian, Ronnie “Two Ronnies” Corbett – TV actor and comedian, and the 3 times Olympic gold medallist Chris Hoy, amongst many others.

The culture vultures amongst your hen party Edinburgh can visit a range of galleries and museums including The National Galleries of Scotland and The National Museum of Scotland, whilst the child in you will love Our Dynamic Earth and Edinburgh Zoo. Edinburgh bursts alive during August when the city plays host to the Edinburgh Festival, wait for it, another world’s largest, this time the worlds largest arts, culture and entertainment festival!

Edinburgh is also renowned as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which combines the medieval Old Town and the Georgian New Town - as well as cutting-edge modern architecture - and its intriguing past and place in history can be explored at almost every turn.

We know that you want to have fun, but a little history won’t harm you…..or will it? Edinburgh started as a fort named Castle Rock. Between the 7th century and the 18th century Edinburgh was fought over by the English and Scottish Kings. Until then, Edinburgh consisted, almost exclusively, of what is now known as the Old Town (the area where you'll find the Castle, Royal Mile and Grassmarket).

The world famous University was founded in 1583, setting in motion the city's educational and professional development. The Bank of Scotland was founded in 1695, the first of many new ventures that would see Edinburgh established as a leading financial capital by the end of the 20th century.

1707 saw the Act of Union, which joined Scotland and England together politically, and moved power from Edinburgh's old parliament to London's Westminster – no wonder the Rugby Calcutta Cup is so forcefully fought over at Murrayfield Stadium!

The city is affectionately nicknamed Auld Reekie (Scots for Old Smoky), because when buildings were heated by coal and wood fires, chimneys would spew thick columns of smoke into the air. Some have called Edinburgh the Athens of the North and Auld Greekie for its intellectual history.

On the more sinister side, in the 19th century, famous criminals from Edinburgh's history include Deacon Brodie, pillar of society by day and burglar by night, who is said to have influenced Robert Louis Stevenson's story, the Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, the murderers Burke and Hare, who provided fresh corpses for anatomical dissection. Yeugh!

For the girls on their Edinburgh hen nights, it does get better though, don’t despair! In our opinion the best inventor in the world was born in Edinburgh in 1847, Alexander Graham Bell, the man who invented a girl’s best friend the telephone!

So, you are now ready to be one of the intellectuals in this fabulous city!

A little further afield……..yet only a bus ride away at the foot of the Pentland Hills, Midlothian Snowsports Centre offers the exhilaration you would expect from Europe's longest and most challenging artificial ski slope, regardless of the snow conditions. Why not be active on your hen party in Edinburgh?

Nearby Fife, St Andrews and East Lothian all offer the ideal place to escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. With fantastic golf courses, pretty towns and villages with peaceful, unspoilt beaches, rolling hills and ancient ruins.

These are just a few of a HUGE range of activities that will keep you entertained and add a bit of excitement to your hen nights in Edinburgh.

Edinburgh has been in the top ten UK cities, winning the award three times, and was a close second in 2007. It is the second most visited UK city after London.
